Slovenia is strengthening its position in the European business events market year by year. MICE has become an established part of the country’s tourism industry, supported by professional industry organisations, dedicated research and a national development strategy for 2025–2030.
At the same time, Slovenia combines established business event infrastructure with a compact geography, diverse natural and cultural attractions, and good value for money.

According to the Slovenian Convention Bureau, Slovenia hosts more than 200 major international professional and scientific events every year. These events last around three days on average and generate approximately €480 in daily spending per participant. The total annual spending generated by this segment exceeds €158 million. Participants in professional events spend, on average, 3.3 times more than leisure tourists. Slovenian Convention Bureau
Growth can also be seen at destination level. Ljubljana recorded 99 international events in 2024, 23.8% more than in 2023. At the same time, 84.8% of these events had fewer than 500 participants, showing the significant role of small and medium-sized events within the international meetings market. Visit Ljubljana
Domestic business travel is growing as well. In 2025, residents of Slovenia made approximately 792,000 business and study trips, 9% more than in 2024. The average trip lasted 2.8 nights, with average spending of around €193 per person per day.
The development of MICE in Slovenia is supported at both government and industry level. The Ministry of Economy, Tourism and Sport supported the KonGOST research project, which examines the motivations, habits and spending of business event participants. The research covers four major MICE destinations: Ljubljana, Bled, Maribor and Portorož. Portal GOV.SI
Slovenia also has a dedicated national convention bureau and a MICE development strategy for 2025–2030. The strategy focuses on competitiveness, international business events, sustainability and reducing seasonality. The country is actively represented at major international meetings industry trade shows and B2B events. Slovenian Convention Bureau
The international position of Slovenia is also reflected in ICCA data. In 2023, the country hosted 67 international meetings organised by professional and scientific associations. For comparison, Austria recorded 203 such meetings, Croatia 86 and Hungary 84. This particular figure covers only association meetings and should not be interpreted as the size of the entire MICE market.
The market also extends well beyond Ljubljana. Bled has more than 25 years of experience hosting international meetings and regularly accommodates medium-sized corporate, association and governmental events. Other established destinations include Portorož and Piran, Maribor, Kranjska Gora and several destinations in western, eastern and northern Slovenia. Slovenian Convention Bureau
One of Slovenia’s practical advantages is its compact size. Major MICE destinations are relatively close to one another, making it possible to combine business programmes, accommodation and additional activities without complicated internal logistics.
The range of settings is equally diverse. Events can take place in Ljubljana, Alpine destinations around Bled and Kranjska Gora, coastal locations such as Portorož and Piran, as well as destinations in eastern and northern Slovenia.
Within a relatively small region, a business programme can be combined with outdoor activities, gastronomy, wellness and cultural experiences. This variety is one of the characteristics highlighted by the Slovenian Convention Bureau when promoting the country internationally. Slovenian Convention Bureau
Cost is another part of Slovenia’s competitive position. The Slovenian Convention Bureau describes the country as offering good value for money compared with other European destinations. The point is not simply lower prices, but the combination of infrastructure, professional services, short distances and the range of experiences available within a single destination. MICE in Slovenia is growing. The number of international events and business trips is increasing, while the economic contribution of professional events is already substantial.
The industry is professionally established. Government strategy, market research, specialised organisations and international promotion provide a structured framework for the continued development of the sector.
Slovenia combines several advantages in one destination. Professional MICE infrastructure, compact geography, efficient logistics, natural and cultural diversity, and good value for money make it possible to organise business events in formats ranging from smaller corporate meetings and retreats to large international gatherings.
As a result, Slovenia offers a well-established European MICE environment with the infrastructure and professional ecosystem required for business events of different sizes, while retaining the accessibility, natural diversity and relatively compact scale that distinguish the country from larger European destinations.
